Nationalism should be that which allows you to express yourself. One need not forego of one's identity in the name of nationalism. One's true identity is based on regional cultures. In fact, one has to recognize the true identity of oneself and then he will be able to evolve out of it to accept the larger nationalist identity. In that sense, Hindi cannot be the national language the way it is being propagated right now. To be able to make Hindi the national language, the essence of Indic language Base needs to be recognized. Three Language Policy is a good initiative in that sense and an effective way to propagate it would be to assign one more language in addition to the existing state languages. Then nobody should feel the imposition of Hindi over regional languages.
In that sense, if someone is a nationalist, he can also demand for a Kannada song in a limited atmosphere where the audience is Kannadigas by and large. To identify oneself with the regional culture should not be a crime. It would be a broad gesture to learn the regional language is spite of getting the best of offers. People have always accepted "outsiders" like PBS, SPB, Chitra, et al and they would have sung a Kannada song even before you would have made a demand for it.
